We All Have Needs

by R C on May 24, 2026

I would like to begin by saying, quite firmly, that I did not need another candle (fragrance).

This is not a situation in which I was lacking candles.

There are, in fact, several. Enough, arguably, to sustain a modestly lit evening for quite some time.

And yet.

This one felt specific.

The Problem with “Enough”

“Enough” is a technical term.

It suggests adequacy. Sufficiency. A baseline level of preparedness.

What it does not account for is nuance.

You may have a candle for:

  • evenings
  • reading
  • general existence

But do you have one for a slightly overcast afternoon where you’re not unhappy, just… reflective?

Exactly.

The Specificity Issue

Some candles are broad.

Pleasant. Agreeable. They do their job without asking too many questions.

This was not one of those candles.

This candle had a point of view.

It was not simply “woodsy.”

It was the kind of woodsy that implies you’ve made a decision and are standing by it, even if you shouldn’t.

It was not just warm.

It was quietly insistent.

And once you notice that, it becomes very difficult to walk away.

A Brief Internal Discussion

There is always a moment, brief, but important, where you attempt to be reasonable.

You think:

  • You already have something similar.
  • This is unnecessary.
  • You are an adult.

All valid points.

Unfortunately, the candle continues to exist.

And worse, it continues to feel increasingly aligned with a very particular version of your personality.

One you may not currently be exhibiting, but could, under the right atmospheric conditions, access.

Justification

You are not buying another candle.

That would be excessive.

You are acquiring something highly specific for a very particular mood that has not yet occurred but almost certainly will.

Possibly this week.

Possibly tonight.

It would be irresponsible not to be prepared.

The Outcome

You bring it home.

You place it among the others, which are now revealed to be less specific than you previously believed.

You light it.

Immediately, everything feels… correct.

Not dramatically better.

Just right, in a way that is difficult to explain to people who have not experienced it.

So…

No, you didn’t need another candle.

But need is a blunt instrument.

This was a matter of precision.
