Why we use phthalate free fragrance oils more than essential oils.

Why we use phthalate free fragrance oils more than essential oils.

Using essential oils around pets can be a topic of concern due to their potential impact on animal health. We at Good Smells Inc use phthalate free, cruelty free fragrance oils in most of our products but do have some that contain essential oils. Here are the pros and cons of using essential oils when you have pets:

Pros:

  1. Natural Remedies: Essential oils are often used in aromatherapy and natural remedies for humans, offering potential benefits like stress relief, relaxation, and improved mood. Some pet owners seek similar benefits for their furry companions.

  2. Repellent Properties: Certain essential oils can act as natural insect repellents. Oils like citronella, peppermint, and lemongrass are commonly used to deter pests like fleas and ticks.

  3. Cleaning and Deodorizing: Some essential oils possess antibacterial and antifungal properties, making them attractive for creating homemade cleaners that are pet-safe and effective.

Cons:

  1. Toxicity Risk: Many essential oils are toxic to pets. Cats, in particular, lack certain liver enzymes necessary to metabolize certain compounds in essential oils, making them more susceptible to poisoning.

  2. Respiratory Issues: Pets have highly sensitive respiratory systems. Diffusing certain oils, especially in poorly ventilated areas, can cause irritation or respiratory issues for pets, including coughing, sneezing, or difficulty breathing.

  3. Skin Sensitivities: Direct contact with concentrated essential oils on the skin can cause irritation or allergic reactions in pets. This may manifest as redness, itching, or inflammation.

  4. Ingestion Dangers: Pets may accidentally ingest essential oils by licking them off surfaces or grooming themselves. Ingestion of certain oils, even in small amounts, can lead to poisoning and severe health issues.

Tips for Using Essential Oils Safely Around Pets:

  • Dilution and Diffusion: Always heavily dilute essential oils before use around pets. Use a well-ventilated space and avoid prolonged exposure, especially in enclosed areas.

  • Consultation: Before using any essential oil around pets, consult a veterinarian. Not all oils are safe for all animals, and some pets may have specific health conditions that make certain oils more dangerous.

  • Observation: Watch for any adverse reactions in your pets when introducing essential oils. If you notice any unusual behavior or symptoms, cease use immediately and seek veterinary advice.

  • Safe Alternatives: Consider alternative pet-safe methods for achieving similar effects, such as using pet-specific aromatherapy products designed and approved for animal use.

While essential oils have potential benefits, their use around pets requires caution and careful consideration. Consulting a veterinarian for guidance specific to your pet's health and needs is always recommended.
